At the forefront of Iceland’s scientific and cultural landscape stands the Icelandic Centre for Research, known as Rannís. This dynamic institution plays a pivotal role in driving research, innovation, education, and cultural enrichment within Iceland and beyond. Through competitive funding mechanisms, strategic research initiatives, and fostering international collaborations, Rannís consistently endeavours to propel Iceland’s growth and development to new heights.
Collaborative Workshop Promoting Interdisciplinary Research
Scheduled for August 2024, the Nordic House in Tórshavn will serve as the venue for a groundbreaking workshop uniting researchers from Greenland, Iceland, and the Faroe Islands. Supported by the Nordic Council of Ministers, this collaborative endeavour aims to facilitate knowledge exchange, interdisciplinary dialogue, and joint ventures. By fostering connections among researchers across the North Atlantic region, Rannís actively fosters cross-border collaboration, enhancing scientific networks and cooperation.
Financial Support Driving Innovation
Rannís allocates substantial financial resources to research projects, serving as a catalyst for innovation and progress. In the fiscal year 2021 alone, grants totalling ISK 1.3 billion were disbursed for new projects, with an estimated total expenditure of approximately ISK 4 billion spanning 2021-2023. Additionally, Rannís continues to bolster ongoing projects from previous funding cycles, contributing nearly ISK 2 billion to their fruition. This sustained investment underscores Rannís’ unwavering dedication to advancing knowledge and tackling societal challenges head-on.
Collaborative Initiatives for Cybersecurity
In collaboration with the European Digital Innovation Hub (EDIH-IS), Defend Iceland, and Reykjavík University, Rannís places a strong emphasis on proactive cybersecurity measures. A recent lunch meeting held in April 2024 centred on enhancing resilience against digital threats. By convening experts in the field, Rannís plays a pivotal role in safeguarding Iceland’s digital infrastructure and promoting cybersecurity best practices.
Engaging with Horizon Europe
Actively participating in Horizon Europe, the European Union’s ambitious research and innovation program, Rannís lends its support to three fundamental pillars:
• Excellent Science: Advancing fundamental research and fostering scientific excellence.
• Global Challenges and Industrial Competitiveness: Addressing societal challenges and bolstering competitiveness.
• Innovative Europe: Encouraging innovation and fostering collaboration across borders.
Through its involvement in Horizon Europe, Rannís contributes significantly to cutting-edge research, sustainable development, and economic prosperity in Iceland.
Beyond Financial Support: Nurturing a Vibrant Research Ecosystem
