Iceland Positions Itself as the Planet’s Geothermal Powerhouse with International Deployment & New Wind Ambitions

Iceland is exporting its energy expertise like never before. On January 14, Iceland GeoSurvey (ÍSOR) and local industrial partner HD confirmed they will lead the commissioning and scientific oversight of Dominica’s first 10 MW geothermal power plant, a landmark project expected to replace a significant portion of the island’s diesel-based electricity.

The announcement highlights Iceland’s rise as the global go‑to contractor for geothermal know‑how, from drilling strategies to reservoir science.

Domestically, Iceland is preparing for its own major energy milestone: the Vaðölduver wind‑power project, the country’s first fully fledged national wind farm, scheduled to begin operations in 2026. Long reliant on hydro and geothermal, Iceland is now diversifying into wind to meet growing electricity demand from data‑centre and industrial expansion.

Meanwhile, a 12 MW renewable‑power agreement with high‑performance‑compute operator atNorth signals Iceland’s escalating role as a green AI compute host, leveraging its cool climate and near‑100% renewable grid.

With the upcoming Krafla Magma Testbed, a 2026–27 attempt to drill into magma to unlock super‑hot geothermal power, Iceland stands on the brink of an energy breakthrough that could redefine power generation worldwide.

From island nations in the Caribbean to next‑generation energy labs at home, Iceland is becoming the world’s geothermal nerve centre.
