Finnish deep-tech startup Granarium Technologies, originating from VTT, has raised more than €1 million to commercialise what it describes as the world’s first renewable, affordable supercapacitors for grid stability and industrial reliability.
The company’s patented technology uses nanocellulose and biocarbon structures derived from waste wood and agricultural residues to create fast-response energy storage. Granarium says the approach can reduce production capital expenditure by up to 80%, while enabling safe, scalable and locally produced systems.
The funding round was led by BSV Ventures, with Beamline and business angel networks FiBAN, EstBAN and LatBAN also participating. VTT has transferred the underlying technology and intellectual property to Granarium, which will now focus on industrialising the technology.
Unlike batteries designed primarily for longer-duration storage, supercapacitors can respond extremely quickly. Granarium’s systems are intended to complement batteries by handling short-duration requirements such as grid balancing, frequency response, peak loads and industrial power-quality problems.
The company has already secured pilot customers and key value-chain partners and plans to launch its first pilots within six months. Initial production will be at small industrial scale, with capacity for up to 50 units annually, before expansion through industrial partnerships and international markets.
Granarium’s proposition is particularly Nordic: turning abundant local forest-industry side streams into advanced technology while reducing dependence on critical raw materials and complex global supply chains.
