ConScience AB Research produces several Quantum Innovations

ConScience AB, established in 2012 in Gothenburg, Sweden, is a pivotal player in nanotechnology and quantum computing. Over the past decade, the company has collaborated with esteemed institutions such as the Universities of Oxford, Cambridge, and Harvard, as well as high-tech enterprises focusing on antibiotic susceptibility testing, air quality monitoring, and quantum computing. 

Nanofluidic Innovations:  In collaboration with Envue Technologies AB, a Chalmers University spin-out, ConScience is advancing Nanofluidic Scattering Microscopy (NSM) technology. This initiative focuses on designing and fabricating nanofluidic chips for NSM detection. The goal is to develop a single-molecule nanofluidic device prototype, validated in industrial settings. ConScience’s expertise in crafting custom-designed nanofluidic chips from biocompatible materials like glass and silicon composites positions them at the forefront of this innovation. 

Quantum Computing Devices: In January 2024, ConScience launched the “Qubit-in-a-box” (QiB0) device, marking Sweden’s first commercial quantum device fully designed and manufactured domestically. The QiB0 features four single qubits and two coplanar waveguide resonators, boasting qubit lifetimes of up to 80 microseconds and resonator quality factors reaching one million. This device serves as a foundational tool for research groups and educational institutions to validate quantum measurement systems and train future quantum scientists and engineers. Expanding its global footprint, ConScience partnered with Quantum Microwave LLC in early 2024 to distribute its quantum devices across North America. 

Neuromorphic Computing Initiatives: ConScience is also venturing into neuromorphic computing (see forumNordic article “What is Neuromorphic Computing”) by collaborating with the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) to develop photonic neuromorphic computing systems on a Lithium Niobate on Insulator (LNOI) platform. This project aims to transcend the limitations of traditional silicon-based technologies by integrating photonic, stochastic, and neuromorphic computing methodologies, potentially revolutionizing the field of artificial intelligence and computing efficiency. 

Funding and Financial Support : ConScience AB’s innovative projects have attracted substantial funding from a combination of internal resources and a Smart Electronics grant from Vinnova, the Swedish Research Agency. In November 2023, ConScience secured 10 million SEK to advance nanofluidic imaging technology and neuromorphic computing systems. These funds are being utilized in collaborative projects with entities like Envue Technologies AB and the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), underscoring the company’s commitment to pioneering research and development in cutting-edge technologies.
